Pego do Inferno Waterfall

Pego do Inferno Waterfall

The Pego do Inferno Waterfall, around Tavira is the largest waterfall on a set of three waterfalls in the Asseca stream (the other two being the Peasant Waterfall and the Torre Waterfall)

Although the Pego do Inferno Waterfall is only 3 meters high, it still impresses.

And if we add to it the beautiful lake of green color – olive, which invites great dives in the summer, and the captivating surrounding scenery, we are facing one of the most beautiful natural places in the entire Algarve. Excellent space to have a picnic and enjoy a pleasant afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the beaches of the Algarve.

And to arouse curiosity and spice up the visit a little, the Cascade do Pego do Inferno even has a good legend associated with it. The saying goes that one day a cart crashed in Pego, the occupants falling into the lagoon. As divers never managed to find the corpses of the wagon occupants and the animals that pulled it, not even the bottom of the pond, they said that the victims had fallen into Hell. And so the Fake of Hell was born.

Until 2012 there was a bathing space in the Pego do Inferno waterfall, but a fire that plowed the area destroyed the pedestrian walk, the bridge that gave access to the lagoon, and the other infrastructures. The destruction caused by the fire led the municipality to close the space to the public.

As nothing was rebuilt, the space was never officially opened to the public again. This does not prevent dozens of people from heading there to enjoy the natural beauty of the Cascade do Pego do Inferno and the refreshing waters of its lagoon.

How to get to the Pego do Inferno Waterfall?

Those who pass through Tavira should not miss the opportunity to see in loco one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Algarve.

But reaching the Pego do Inferno Waterfall, without doing your homework, may prove to be – a somewhat complicated task.

As the space is not officially open to the public, there is no signings from Tavira, although it is a mere 10 kilometers northwest of Tavira.

Fortunately, Google maps continue to mark the Cascade of Pego do Inferno, so get to the parking lot that is still there, it is not at all difficult for anyone to be accompanied by a smartphone or GPS.

From the parking lot to the Cascade do Pego do Inferno it is less than one kilometer and the journey takes less than ten minutes to complete. The problem is that there is no indication as to which direction to take, which means that many of the visitors end up taking the wrong direction and see themselves as Greeks to get there.
