Hey BlogTolters !
You already know the gear I’m using to shoot (if not, just take a look at this article). But is it worth having gear if you don’t have the right computer to edit your work ?
So here’s more insight on how I built my own PC configuration to use Adobe Premiere, After Effects… with FULL HD and even 4K footage!
I. My config
II. Mac or PC ?
For me, there’s no doubt because I kind of hate Apple. I don’t deny the good-looking design and the performances of their products, but I don’t like their stategy to get you stuck in the “Apple system” and make you buy new products and accessories every two years.
And yes, PC is a good solution to tackle planned obsolescence because unlike macs, you can replace/fix only one or two components instead of buying a brand new computer.
In addition you can mount your own PC configuration, which is way cheaper, and you can’t do it with Apple.
However, I must admit that if you have to invite clients into your office, macs can do a better impression. But I prefer to convince my clients with the quality of my work rather than the design of my tools…
III. The different steps to create your own configuration
1) Clarify your needs
How will you use your computer? For editing only? For professional needs? Or just for fun? HD footage? Full HD? 4K? Do you need accessories (screen, keyboard, mouse…)?
2) Define your budget
What is your budget ? Is this investment a priority compared to your other needs ?
3) Ask for advice
It’s really easy to get good advice adapted to your needs and budget from your personal contacts our on websites / specialized forums.
By the way, don’t hesitate to send me an email at hello@tolt.productions and describe me your needs and budget so I can help you and share some advice 😉
4) Order the products
I recommand Amazon, their customer service is really efficient and offers a 30 days return window after delivery.
5) Mount the computer by yourself !
It can be scary, but I highly recommend you to mount the computer by yourself. It’s not that complicated and probably faster than you think. There’s a lot of good tutorials in the internet, and you’ll be more confident if you ever have to change a piece in a few years. And most of all, it’s a very good way to save money !
Here is a good basic tutorial:
